Gas reserves in the Shewa fields of North Waziristan

Pakistan has discovered significant gas reserves in the Shewa fields of North Waziristan, estimated at 351.2 billion cubic feet (BCF).
This find is expected to last 17 years, with plans to channel 70 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) from the Shewa-2 well into the national grid.
This increase is projected to boost the country’s daily gas production by over 3%, reducing reliance on expensive fuel imports and saving substantial foreign exchange.
According to Mari Petroleum's 2024 Annual Report, the company is on track to deliver 70 mmcfd from Shewa-2 via a new pipeline constructed by Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL). Sunny Kumar, an analyst from Topline Research, noted that hydrotesting of the pipeline is currently underway.
Although the project faced delays due to security issues, the pipeline was completed in August 2024. Gas injection into the grid will start after the Early Production Facilities (EPF) are commissioned and a gradual ramp-up occurs.
Mari Petroleum’s report highlights that this development will boost domestic gas supply by over 3%, enhance production capacity, and diversify the company’s portfolio, leading to significant revenue growth.
