In a remarkable display of environmental innovation, a well-known Japanese national daily, The Mainichi Shimbunsha, has introduced a truly sustainable newspaper. Aptly named the "Green Newspaper," this pioneering publication is crafted from recycled and vegetable paper, but what makes it truly exceptional is that once you've finished reading it, you can plant it.
The concept behind this eco-friendly newspaper involves using a mixture of recycled paper, water, and small flower or herb seeds, a technology that has been available for some years. When you're done with the newspaper, instead of discarding it, you can tear it into small pieces, plant it, and water it. Within a few weeks, the paper will surprise you by sprouting into plants and flowers.
The idea for this eco-friendly newspaper was conceived in collaboration with Dentsu Inc, one of Japan's largest advertising agencies, which partners with "The Mainichi." Notably, "The Mainichi" has a history of environmental commitment, having previously undertaken an advertising campaign to support water donations for communities in need.
This venture into sustainability has proven highly successful, with the Green Newspaper boasting a daily circulation of over four million copies nationwide and generating revenues of approximately eighty million yen, equivalent to over $700,000. Furthermore, the initiative extends to educational institutions, involving schools in raising children's awareness of environmental issues and imparting the significance of recycling, especially when it comes to paper, a crucial step in reducing CO2 emissions associated with traditional waste disposal methods
